"I don’t understand… I just don’t understand. I’ve never heard such a strange story."
Rashomon - Akira Kurosawa
Evangelion > Pacific Rim
As a person who has been a kaiju fan since I began forming permanent memories, I’d like to cordially ask all of my fellow kaiju fans who feel compelled to call Pacific Rim a ripoff of Evangelion/Godzilla/Power Rangers/etc. to kindly shut the fuck up.
Evangelion did not invent giant robots fighting giant monsters. In fact, Evangelion would not freaking exist if there hadn’t been countless shows and movies before it that were about that same basic premise, because the whole gimmick of Evangelion is that it’s a deconstruction of the Giant Robots vs Giant Monsters genre of storytelling.
Don’t believe me? The creator himself said he was inspired by Ultraman, and that the whole point of Evangelion was to show how messed up the teenage pilots in most Giant Robot vs Giant Monster shows would be psychologically. Evangelion is just “VOLTRON BUT WITH ANGST AND PSYCHOLOGICAL BREAKDOWNS: THE SERIES.”
Oh, and it’s head shoved firmly up its ass with its own symbolism. Can’t forget that.
Gojira was inspired by The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms and King Kong. MechaGodzilla was inspired by - or, more accurately, ripped off from - Giant Robo, right down to the way he was shot in a giant hangar. MechaGodzilla’s heroic turn in the Heisei and millenium series of Godzilla movies (originally MechaGodzilla was a villain) was inspired by the same anime and live action robot shots that Evangelion deconstructed, right down to having MechaGodzilla combine with other machines to get more powerful.
All of the classic kaiju stories you like - hell, all classic stories in general - feed from the stories that came before them and feed into the stories that come after. So trying to dismiss Pacific Rim because it “rips off Evangelion” is ludicrously hypocritical, because it Evangelion itself is just as much of a ripoff by that logic.
But hey, you know what is a good way to write off a show? How about saying the show that features its protagonist jerking off over the unconscious form of his crush without her consent is the one that is lesser? I don’t remember it happening in Pacific Rim, but that awful, stupid, needlessly revolting crap is friggin’ abundant in Evangelion.
Given those options, I’ll take the silly movie that doesn’t have rapey shit in it over the pretentious anime it “rips off” any day.
